Seven storage ideas for small Indian apartments

You probably do not need a bigger flat. You need furniture that works harder in the space you already have.

Most apartments are not short of space so much as short of usable space. Corners, wall height and the volume under existing furniture are almost always going unused. Here are seven ways to reclaim them without renovating.

1. Go vertical before you go wider

Floor space is expensive, wall space is free. Tall, narrow shelving holds more than a low wide unit while taking up less of the room, and it draws the eye upward, which makes a small room feel taller.

2. Choose beds that store things

A bed with drawers underneath or a hydraulic lift-up base recovers a large volume of storage that is otherwise dead space. This is the single highest-impact change in most one-bedroom flats, and ideal for bedding, luggage and seasonal clothes.

3. Put the corners to work

Right-angle corners are the most wasted area in any room. A corner shelf, a triangular desk or a rounded corner cabinet turns an awkward gap into genuine capacity, and softens the boxiness of small rooms.

4. Make one piece do two jobs

  • A storage ottoman is seating, a footrest and a blanket box.
  • A nesting coffee table separates into side tables when guests arrive.
  • A drop-leaf dining table serves two on weekdays and six on weekends.

5. Use the space above doors

The 40 to 50 cm above most doorways and in wardrobes is almost never used. A simple shelf there is perfect for items you need only a few times a year, like suitcases, festival decorations and spare bedding.

6. Contain the small things

Open shelves look cluttered fast because small objects have no edges to hide behind. Baskets and boxes on open shelving give you the airiness of open storage with the calm of closed storage, and they make cleaning far quicker.

7. Leave some space empty

This is the one people skip. A room where every surface is occupied reads as cramped no matter how organised it is. Deliberately leaving one shelf and one length of counter clear does more for the feeling of space than another storage unit would.

Our storage range is designed around exactly these constraints. Have a look at Storage & Organisation, or send us photos of the room and we will suggest what would fit.
